I Have A Project With No Plan – And That’s Ok

I certainly got wound up yesterday afternoon when it appeared I’d leveraged quite a bit of poor judgement in both my fabric and pattern choices since I started sewing again a couple of months ago. By midnight I’d been able to match my most promising patterns up with my fabrics, which means I was also able to reassure myself satisfactorily.

I decided to take another stab at McCall’s M7325 today. It occurred to me that there’s a lot of fabric to work with in this pattern, even in a size small — but I needed to start putting it together so I could get some ideas about how to make the most of what I already cut out.

I queued up Kirsty MacColl’s Tropical Brainstorm on iTunes and got to basting. The sleeves are back on, as well as half the lower front section.

Then I took a step back to assess.

Here’s what she looks like right now:

Believe it or not, I see potential here.
Believe it or not, I see potential here.

It’s clear to me that I simply don’t like this design. That’s problem number one. It’s unflattering, and not only because the bottom of the bodice hits my bustline in exactly the wrong place. And not only because the fabric is too heavy, by the way. That sleeve design just isn’t going to fly in my wardrobe. I need something with a more tailored underarm — something that’s more fitted around the bodice. Finally, you’ll notice that when you take a step back and take the whole thing in, the colors just don’t seem to have anything to do with each other. That’s interesting to me, because up close, they actually do:

Notice the matching blues in the main fabric and the blues in the bodice.
Notice the matching blues in the main fabric and the blues in the bodice.

And yet, there’s something about this whole contraption that whispers “Come back later when you have more experience… there’s the promise of magic in me….”

So I’m going to stop working on this. It will be hanging in the back of my closet for a time in the future when I’m ready to wave a magic wand and make whatever should be happening here happen.

For right now, I’ve got plenty of other options. In fact, my biggest problem right now is deciding which project I want to tackle first. Not a bad problem to have. Addendum: right after I posted this, Lynn Anderson’s Rose Garden played on iTunes and it was perfect.
